The man in the cartoon is Shlomo Cohen (self-portrait) eating Tnuva cottage cheese with chopsticks after a Chinese corporation bought a majority of its shares. Tnuva was a symbol of agricultural settlement in the country. Its most popular products - Tnuva milk and cottage cheese. The 75th Independence Day edition of "Malka" beer and the Hakerem company is dedicated this year to the Shamir brothers. The beer labels will feature graphics by the brothers, who were the first graphic designers in Israel, and worked from the mid 1930s to the early 1990s. Maor Helfman, director of Israeli beers at the Hakerem company, explained the choice: "Malka beer is the largest and oldest craft brewery in Israel. A few years ago we wanted to celebrate Israeliness, and we did so using figures of leaders designed for us by Amit Shimoni. These were illustrations of leaders as hipster figures, and it was a huge success. We realized that we were on to something and we must make it a tradition every Independence Day”.

"This year we wanted to pay tribute to the Shamir brothers, among the first designers in Israel, even before the establishment of the state. They are responsible for iconic posters that we all grew up with, as well as the state emblem and the post office logo. We wanted to pay homage to them at the centre of the stage. We contacted the Shenkar Center for the Study of Art in Israel, who holds the rights to their collection. They were very enthusiastic and saw this as a way to continue the glorious legacy of the Shamir Brothers. They contacted their heirs, who agreed. We received a database of hundreds of posters and illustrations, and they told us we had a free hand. We chose the five posters we most connected with: one that calls for the Hebrew youth to join the navy, one for women to join the army, and more."

A set of beer labels designs that are based on Shamir poster designs of historic origin significance. These products will be launched in Feb 2023 to celebrate Israel's 2023 Independence day.

This confirmation of the donation receipt is similar to a Shamir poster for the same purpose. It is most likely their work since the date is from the same year but we have no proof of this

The Gindi Holdings Company advertises a new neighborhood "Karmei Hanadiv" in three page-sized ads

One of the items is a First Day Cover for the opening of a post office in Rafah that was captured by the IDF in the Sixth Day War. On the FDC - a stamp designed by the Shamir brothers in 1955 to mark a decade of mobilization of the Hebrew Yeshuv to the struggle against the Nazis in World War II. Heroism is symbolized by the boys and girls who volunteered to parachute in the countries occupied by the Nazis

​Eran Litvin created a visual investigation for a new documentary on Kan 11 about songs written after the Yom Kippur War. For this purpose, he asked to use an image of banknotes that the Shamir brothers designed in an animation of a graphic transition.​

"Israel Today" marks the declaration of the State emblem on February 10, 1949 in the section "Seventy Years After" by David Sela. After nine months of deliberations, the Provisional Council of the State unanimously accepted the emblem design proposal of the Shamir brothers. On June 19, the brothers received the prize, 200 IL. The brothers received an apology saying: In the difficult financial conditions of the state, the treasury can not make a larger sum available for your prize.   February 2019

This is an advertisement for the "reserve" pool of directors in government companies. Someone came up with the nickname "selected" for this reserve to upgrade its status. This gave rise to the idea for this design - football team selection. The companies, whose logos appear on the ball, are some of the largest government companies.

Digital book "Stories from the Land of My Love - Book Four" by Mordechai Naor, 2017 used the Shamir brothers poster for Israel's eighth Independence Day

In the book "My Jerusalem" 2020 by Joshua Lebanon, a chapter is dedicated to The Exhibition of the Decade.  The accompanying illustration by Daria Moses - was inspired by the stamp of the Decade designed by the Shamir brothers in 1958.

The designer wanted to present the achievements of the various schools as an official document (there is no such document in reality). What did he do? He placed the State emblem at the top of the "Certificate" and created a framework of the olive branches that appear in the State emblem. The article also features two more "certificates" that show parameters of school functioning.

The Shamir poster "From the City to the Village" appears in the book "Israeli Lessons - Arcadia Industrial" published by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne this year. Editors: Harry Gogger and others. Two posters were designed by the Shamir brothers in the 1950s for a campaign of the Histadrut.

 

The President's Award for Volunteerism is awarded every year by the President of the State to bodies, institutions and organizations, individuals or groups of volunteers who work exceptionally well in their contribution to society.

Today (29 June 2018) ads of "The Art of Israeli Discourse" first appeared in the local papers. In order to give it a taste of Israeli-ness and at the same time of statehood, the designer built a logo with the olive branches from the state emblem.

On the occasion of Israel's 70th year, a self-published book on the history of the Israeli currency was published by Yigal Arkin, "Currency through Time - The Story of a State". The works of Shamir Brothers - banknotes and coins - are extensively covered. For the 1959 Shamir designed banknote series depicting various characters the author includes photographs of the people who served as models for the Shamir brothers. Most of these models were identified and named by the author.

Designers were asked by the curator Nadav Barkan to propose their interpretation of the Seven - branched Menorah on the 70th anniversary of the state with reference to the State Emblem that has become a major element in the country's visual culture. The project was called: The 490 branches (70 years x 7 branches for each Menorah). Displayed are a number of the entries.

Tnuva is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

 Seven Shamir Brothers posters are included in the "Justify your Existence" exhibit at the Herbert and Eileen Bernard museum of Judaica in Temple Emanuel Fifth Avenue, New York. The exhibition of 40 posters from the private collection of the late Dr. Alfred Moldovan. Most posters are in Hebrew and some in Yiddish. The exhibition was opened in May 2014 and was planned to close in late October, but was extended to January 2015.

Uri Shamir, the editor of the English version of this site, warned the auction house "Jerusalem of Gold" that, to the best of his knowledge, six items offered for sale on December 9, 2014, allegedly baring the signature of his father, the late Maxim Shamir, are carrying forged signatures! The items include: first Day Cover of the stamp of the Negev 1950, the Jerusalem stamp memorial sheet 1949, the Congress XXIII stamp sheet with the Herzl stamp 1951 and the Mo'adim Lesimha (Festivals) stamps sheet 1949.

 A Shamir Brothers poster has been used on the cover of a new Israel National Labour Federation booklet of posters produced since its inception in 1934 until today.The poster was used without permission and without giving credit. If that were not enough, the greatest effrontery is that this was the only poster in the booklet that was not produced on behalf of the Labour Federation - it was a Herut party poster!. The booklet designers erased the logo of the Herut movement and quotations of Herzl and Jabotinsky. In their place they inserted in the Shamir 1954 poster the date of publication of this booklet: July 2014.

The ad uses a poster designed by Shamir Brothers in 1942 that was designed to encourage Eretz Israel women to volunteer to the Women's Auxiliary Corps (ATS) in the British Army during World War II. The ad's heading is taken from the poster's header banner which was taken from Isaiah 52/1 (the original verse was meant for the residents of the city of Jerusalem).

 A recently released booklet From Latvia to the Mediterranean, which was compiled and published by members of the Association of Latvian and Estonian Jews in Israel, features the late brothers Gabriel and Maxim Shamir, who in 1935 founded the Society of Hebrew Graphic Artists in Eretz Israel.

The brothers, whose original surname in Latvia was Sheftelowitz, each studied graphic design at the Charlottenburg School of Arts in Berlin. From Berlin they returned to Riga and openned a Graphics studio. In 1943/5 they moved to Tel Aviv where they opened the Shamir Brothers Studio on Rothschild Boulevard. Following the establishment of the state, they designed the state’s emblems, medals, stamps and currency notes, including the official emblem containing the menorah and the olive branch. They also designed stamps for countries in Africa, Asia and South America – and of course produced many designs for consumer product advertisements in Israel.

In their native Latvia, the Shamir brothers, though deceased for well over 20 years, are so highly regarded that an exhibition of their works under the title of “Independence” has been on view at the National Library of Latvia since early February, and will remain on view till April 4. A special medal was minted for the occasion. The exhibition was curated by Gabriel Shamir’s son Yoram E. Shamir, who aside from having a family interest in the works of his father and uncle, has a professional interest as someone who was in the public relations / advertising industry.

In their designs, the Shamir brothers, who were icons in their day, reflected the elements that created Israel’s independence: symbols of sovereignty, immigration, absorption, security, economic development, language and national culture. These are also the subjects of the exhibition. The most famous and enduring of their designs is the official emblem of the State of Israel, though it is doubtful that a random quiz would find many people, if anyone, who could correctly answer who was responsible for the design.

Among the works on view in Riga is the sketch for a monument dedicated to Jewish soldiers who fell in the Latvian War of Independence. The monument is located at the New Jewish Cemetery in Riga, but the sketch dates back to 1934.

In 1974 the brothers decided to work separately and closed the studio. They remained on good terms with each other, but each wanted to work as an individual rather than as part of a team. They continued to each work separately for nearly 20 years.

In Israel the Shamir brothers were called “national designers,” but in fact they were very international. In addition to their work in Latvia and Israel, they also worked for 18 other countries.

The exhibition in Riga was organized by the Embassy of Israel to Latvia in cooperation with the National Library of Latvia and was produced with significant support from United Israel Appeal, the Israel State Archives, the Zionist Central Archives, the Academic Library of the University of Latvia, the Eretz Israel Museum and private collections. After April 4, the exhibition will be opened in Liepaja, where the brothers were born, and Daugavpils. The opening of the exhibition coincided with the launch of the book Shamir Brothers – Designers Who Became Icons.

Israel's State Emblem - Until the official publication of the new State Emblem in February 1949 the Committee of Ministers responsible for selecting the emblem asked Shamir brothers for several changes to their original design. Over the years government agencies, designers, printers and architects allowed themselves to make changes to the official design. The most common change one can see occasionally is dropping the shield. Shamir Brothers included this element in their design since their studies revealed that most countries at that time based their state emblem on the shape of a shield to express their sovereignty and statehood. The first who dropped the shield for the design was Richard Har'el the adviser to the government's symbols Committee. He replaced the shield with a square for the President's banner. His design was approved by President Chaim Weizmann.

Israel Post Logo - The original Israel Post icon was designed by Shamir Brothers in 1948 and was displayed for almost 40 years at all post office branches and on their cars, mailboxes, publications and official documents and forms. In 1986 the status of the Post Office was changed from a Government Ministry to a  Government Authority. At that point the new Authority's management decided to change the logo, but did not change the basic design concept of the famous deer. Twenty two years later the Authority became a Government company. The new management wanted to create a new face for the postal service and redesigned all its branches as well as its icon. To reflect the era where speed is paramount the designer of the new icon tried to express greater speed of a running deer by tearing his body and stretching his legs.

Tnuva Cottage Cheese - Shamir Brothers designed the cup that holds the soft white cheese "cottage" in 1962. The idea was to introduce a peaceful countryside scene combined with the whiteness of the cheese. Over the years, Tnuva comissioned the designer Baruch Naeh to create updated designs for the product, but the main idea remains as it was: Pastoral. Naeh made changes to the cabin, the cow and the font of the brand. 

 "Made in Israel" was the name of an exhibition held in Tel Aviv in 1923. The Society for the Encouragement of the use of the produce of the country over imports from abroad was active during the years of the mandate. The Icon/Logo designed by Shamir brothers consisted of a stylised menorah with an industry icon (gear) and an agricultural icon (sheaves). Parallel efforts were made in the 30s to encourage consumption of Jewish agricultural products ("the Hebrew Banana" for example) instead of Arab produce and the consumption of Jewish Eretz Israel industrial goods ("Israeli - smoke Israeli").

The Council for a Beautiful Israel was established in 1968 by Ora Herzog, wife of President Chaim Herzog (and mother of the current (6/2014) leader of the opposition Buzi Herzog).
