An article in the Latvian Delfi.lv portal
On the 25th of May 2021 we received, out of the blue, the following message through the contact facility of our website.
"Hello, I am Viesturs Radovics, a journalist from the Latvian portal Delfi. I am currently preparing material about the Shamir brothers. Can we use pictures of brothers' works of art (stamps, posters, banknotes) from your website? Thanks!"
We contacted Viesturs and there followed an exchange of messages where he explained his interest in the Shamir brothers : “The well known Latvia born international artists”. He shared with us pictures of some historical documents about the brothers that he discovered in official archives (passports and marriage certificates).
There were a few surprises in the material he unearthed. In particular, it turns out that Maxim Shamir's name at birth was “Motel”. We have no idea when he became Max/Maxim/Mecki. We also learned that Maxim's and Guttel's father, Haim Hirsch (Herman) was born in Bauska in 1879.
A few weeks later Viesturs' article appeared on the Delfi website under the “Israel” and the “Liepaja” tags. The full article, in Latvian, can be seen here.
It is wonderful and heart-warming that after all these years there is still a local interest in the story of these Latvian born artists following the successful exhibition of the Shamir brothers' work in 2019.
