Students Annual contest

Who is the model?

In the catalog of the exhibition "A Place for Fashion" which is currently being held at the Israel Museum, the half-pound (Lira) banknote designed by Shamir Brothers takes pride of place in the chapter Austerity/Abundance by Efrat Asaf-Shapira. Hannah Shefer, who posed as a Nahal soldier was interviewed in the weekly "La'isha": "Personally, I prefer the urban aspect of the banknote. I plan to enrol in the Law and Economics School in Tel Aviv and enrich my bank account by a lot of half  pounds."

At the beginning of the article, it is stated that at Ben-Gurion's request, the bills were to represent the "builders of the land." In a 2006 book by the Bank of Israel, Yigal Arkin, "The Banknotes and Coins in Israel," it was claimed that the initiative for "figures representing different sectors of Israeli society" came from a public committee headed by Prof. Yigael Yadin. As for the identity of the model, Arkin presents photographs of three young women (which he identifies as Rachel Shefer, Esther Dinur and another unidentified person) holding a basket of oranges. "There is no doubt that the figure on the banknote is a combination of several of them," he says.
