On the heels of brothers Bejarano

In May 13, 2009 I received a call from Dr. Mordechai Naor who said that he was working on a book on industrial firms in Ramat Gan. He met with Bejeraos' two daughters and they showed him humorous material drawn by the Shamir Brothers that was probably meant for internal use at the plants of their families' enterprises Assis and Cigarettes. He passed the material to Beit Krinitzy to scan and I would get a disc.

A month later Motke sent me the phone numbers of the two heiresses. I called Ilana Raviv, daughter of Simon Bejerano. She told me that the Shamir brothers and the brothers Bejarano were also friends outside of office hours. She recalled chats about the Shamirs during her childhood at home and that she remembers their graphic works. She also remembered a stamp album issued by the cigarettes company.

Her cousin is Yael Kantor, the daughter of Joseph (Pepo) Bejerano. Ruby suggested that we compare the phone number we got from Motke to the phone number of the famous solicitor Israel Kantor who appears in the book of Governors of the Tel Aviv University. Bingol!! This Yael, is his wife. A few years ago both entertained a delegation of American attorneys general that Ruby hosted in the country. I called her and introduced myself and she said that she knew a Yoram Shamir but, unfortunately, she could not add any information with regards to the humorous material which was discovered in her home.

On July 13, I got Motke's disc. I put it into the computer and this is what was discovered:

1) "Newsreel: Metro Paramount - Shamir". Date: 30/11/40 cartoons about brothers Bejarano and workers in the factories, drawn in black marker (according to the archivist of Beit Krinitzy), in the format of postcards. Among the postcards – “The advertising orchestra” - Gabriel and Maxim Shamir and Friedman (Bejarano's director of advertising)

2) "Fantasia." Text: Freidman. Illustrations: Shamir Brothers. Cartoons on the brothers and other workers in relation to the World war, a booklet in accordion folding format. Based on the cartoon "The Conquest of Tripoli" I could date the booklet as 1943. One cartoon shows the two Shamir brothers: one body with two heads (Gabriel and Maxim) with the title" Two are better than the one." On the floor are shown three graphic works. I actually found these three as b/w ads in daily newspapers of the time. However, according to their size in the cartoon they look like posters. They were:

One – for Cigarette “Odem”. Micah Riss told me that this poster is in his collection. I also found in the paper "Tesha Baerev” (9 pm) a photo of a building and on its roof a huge poster (5-6 meters high) of “Odem”.

Two - Cigarette “Simon Artzt” - I did not know until now that there was a poster like that.

Third - Fruit juices from Assis. When I saw the ad in “Davar” for the first which got special mention and praise for its colours. Was this the poster for the Assis juice? time I recalled a colour poster with the same image. An article about the Shamir exhibition in 1940 mentioned a poster "Fruit crown"

I worked with Freidman at Bauer Advertising in 1961. He was responsible for Assis account. I remembered him at my Bar-Mitzvah at my father's house. Freidman played the piano wearing a woman's straw hat, and Amnon Arieli stood next to him and sang (I may be confusing who did what). At that time the Senior accountant at Bauer was Shmuel Varshavsky. I left him a message that I was looking for Freidman (Freidman is probably deceased by now. He was quite old when I started working at Bauer). Shmuel got back to me with Refael Freidman's phone number – the son. It turned out that he also is no longer alive. I spoke with his widow and daughter and they sent me a greeting card that was designed by Gabriel Shamir celebrating Refael's birth.

At the cartoons exhibition on the State of Israel emblem (April-July 2007) I included the cartoon drawn by the Shamir brothers of themselves. It also appears in the catalogue of the exhibition.
