The series of characters
Pure silver 999, 5 grams

Following public dissatisfaction with the design of the back of the previous series of banknotes, the landscape series, which carried abstract models, it was decided to issue a new series of banknotes. This time a public committee was established with judges, artists, researchers and intellectuals, headed by archaeologist Yigal Yadin.
The basic idea in designing the new series was "old versus new": on the back of the banknotes, archaeological themes from the antiquities of the Jews in Israel were chosen as the remains of synagogues, cemeteries and hidden scrolls, while figures representing various sectors of Israeli society were chosen:

- The female soldier represents the Nahal (warrior pioneer youth) and the settlement.
- The fisherman represents the development of fishing and seafaring.
- The builder represents construction and industry.
- The scientist represents science and research.
- The young man and woman - The Pioneers - represent the merging of the pioneers.

The figures that appeared on the banknotes also appeared in the watermark.
The series, which replaced its predecessor, was gradually put into circulation in the years 1959-1960.

In an auction held by Kedem Auction house in Jerusalem on Wednesday, July 16 2014, it sold sketches and photographs used for the Shamir banknotes of the Bank of Israel. Front side was designed by Shamir Brothers in 1959 (back side designed by Jakob Zim).

The prices obtained were not uniform: sketches of the Infantry soldier banknote and of the fisherman banknote were sold for $ 5,000 each. The Scientist banknote for $4600, the Factory worker banknote for $4000 and the pioneers banknote for $3200. Overall, the sketches and photographs were sold for $21,800. The characters in the original designs submitted by Shamir brothers in response to the Bank's tender were stylised but the final designs of the characters appearing on the front of the banknotes were realistic. This is because after winning the tender for the banknotes, the bank instructed the Shamir Brothers to redraw the characters in a realistic style to make it harder for counterfeiters.
