The national initiative – taxes for our defence

The initiative opened on March 1, 1948. Members of the Haganah visited the residents' homes and workplaces. There were rallies and gatherings. The follow-up of dodgers was meticulous - the eye is watching and the hand recording 

The national fund

Four days before the declaration of the state on May 11, 1948, the Jewish Agency announced the issuing of the certificates of the national fund. The certificates were sold at banks and other financial institutions

The Provisional Council of State was enacted on December 17, 1948 three fundraising orders: The War Fund, The National Fund were intended for the general public and a third fund aimed at institutions

The Defence Fund

In the wake of the Czech-Egyptian arms deal, spontaneous donations were made in the country for the purchase of arms for Israel. On 23.10.1955, Prime Minister Moshe Sharett issued a call to the entire population to contribute to the Protection Fund 

Security Fund 

Immediately following the Sinai Campaign on November 25, 1956, the government announced the issuing of "security fund" bonds sold through the banks. Finance Minister Levi Eshkol said that this fund was not connected to the war but to the Czech-Egyptian arms deal

Austerity

Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion announced on 27 April 1949 a rationing regime called 'austerity measures'. He established a ministry for supply and rationing and appointed Dr. Dov Yosef to head it, and the ministry planned the amount of food, clothing, detergents, etc. that would be allocated to every person in Israel. 

Food for all

In order to feed a population that doubled in size, the food inventory had to be distributed equally and fairly, as were other commodities. Each family received a coupon book
